Hybrid Travel Trailers: The "Best of Both Worlds"
Tow Small, Sleep Big. The Ultimate Solution for Families with Mid-Size SUVs.
For many families, the biggest hurdle to buying an RV is their tow vehicle. You need beds for the kids, but you don't want to trade in your SUV for a heavy-duty pickup.
The Hybrid Travel Trailer (or "Expandable") is the engineering miracle that solves this problem. By using fold-out tent ends for the beds, you get the interior floor space and amenities of a hard-sided trailer, with the lightweight towing profile of a smaller unit. At Leisure Days RV Centre Kitchener (Ayr), we are the hybrid experts, stocking the best from Jayco and Forest River.

Why Choose a Hybrid?
1. Maximum Sleeping, Minimum Length In a traditional trailer, a queen bed takes up 5 feet of floor space. In a hybrid, that bed folds out of the trailer. This means a 20-foot hybrid often has the same interior living space as a 28-foot conventional trailer. You fit into smaller campsites, but sleep like a king.
2. SUV-Friendly Towing Because they are shorter and lighter, most hybrids can be towed by properly equipped mid-size SUVs like the Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, or Jeep Grand Cherokee.
3. The "Nature" Connection Hybrid owners love the cross-breeze. With the tent ends unzipped, you get the fresh air and sounds of nature like a pop-up, but with the security, bathroom, and kitchen of a hard-wall trailer.
Our Leading Hybrid Brands
Jayco Jay Feather
The Rugged Choice. Jayco is famous for building the most durable hybrids on the road.
-
DuraTek™ Vinyl: Jayco uses heavy-duty, water-repellent vinyl tent material that is permanently attached to the bunk door—no velcro or bungee cords needed.
-
Magnum Truss™ Roof: The strongest roof in the industry, capable of holding 4,500 lbs.
-
Integrated A-Frame: The frame runs directly through the main chassis, preventing the "buckling" that cheaper frames suffer from over time.
Forest River Rockwood Roo / Flagstaff Shamrock
The Luxury Hybrid. Forest River packs these units with features you usually only find in high-end fifth wheels.
-
Heated Mattresses: Every bunk end comes standard with a heated mattress to keep you toasty even on cool October nights.
-
Aluminum Cage Construction: 6-sided aluminum framing makes these units incredibly light yet stiff.
-
Easy Latch System: The new latch systems allow you to set up the beds in seconds without struggling with clamps or poles.
"Turtle Mode": A Secret Feature
One of the coolest features of a Hybrid is the ability to "Turtle." If you stop for a quick overnight sleep at a Walmart or rest stop and don't want to fold out the beds, you don't have to! You can still access the bathroom, kitchen, and dinette with the ends closed. Many families sleep on the convertible dinette or sofa for these quick stops, keeping the unit secure and stealthy.
Hybrid Care & Maintenance
We often get asked: "Are they cold? Do they leak?" Modern hybrids are miles ahead of the old pop-ups.
-
Condensation Control: We recommend Pop-Up Gizmos (solar bunk covers) or using your roof fans to keep airflow moving.
-
Security: When you lock the hard-shell door, you are just as secure as a standard travel trailer.
-
Leak Prevention: Jayco’s vacuum-bonded bunk doors create a permanent seal when closed, keeping water out while you travel.
Hybrid FAQs
Q: Can I put a bike rack on the back of a hybrid? A: It depends on the bumper rating. However, many Rockwood Roo models now come with a factory receiver hitch specifically for bike racks. Ask our team before you bolt anything on!
Q: How long does it take to set up? A: With modern latch systems, one person can drop the beds and set the tension poles in about 5–7 minutes. It’s significantly faster than a traditional pop-up camper.
Q: Do I need extended mirrors for my SUV? A: Most hybrids are 8-feet wide (standard width). While you can tow without them, we highly recommend clip-on towing mirrors to see past the width of the trailer for safety.
